Palenque Ruins in Mexico - Are They Worth Visiting?

Chances are you've been to other ruins in Mexico, either Teotihuacan if you flew into Mexico City or Chichén Itza if you landed in Cancun, or perhaps you've visited any other of the many ruins in Mexico and are wondering if Palenque is worth visiting? The short answer is a resounding YES!

But, and there's always a but, if you're pressed for time maybe but just maybe you could consider skipping Palenque.

Palenque is a whole day journey by ADO bus from either San Cristobal in the state of Chiapas, Merida in Yucatan or Veracruz in the state of Veracruz. You'll have to factor this in before going to Palenque as this will add a good 3 days to any itinerary, getting to Palenque, visiting the ruins and continuing with your onward travels. With all these considerations out of the way, Palenque is an impressive and magical archaeological site. Think Mayan ruins immersed in the Jungle, streams of freshwater everywhere (the Mayans were really ingenious) with more ruins for you to visit, different tropical birds and occasionally some howler monkeys as well as a very interesting museum.

Even the town of Palenque shouldn't be missed, it's true that there's not much to do here but isn't that entirely the point of being on holidays? Relaxing and taking it easy?

Tip: When in the town, come here to ZOT'S Cafe - Resto for some excellent food and a great atmosphere.
